Patriot League Final Player WAR Rankings

(I will be crunching the numbers and giving complete player rankings for EVERY D1 conference, using conference only stats and win/loss results as each conference regular season ends. The “write ups” will follow pretty similar formats, since I don’t really have the time to spend much time with each write up. Will obviously tweet out results as usual as soon as each post is up. At the end of each conference write up, I will try to include links to all conference write ups that have already been posted – and maybe an ETA for the next conference.)

What we may garner from the above results….

Player of the Year: Tim Kempton of Lehigh led the conference in Wins Above Replacement (3.9). However, Kevin Ferguson of Army, who missed 4 games, did edge him out in the more “per minute” ratings: WAR/40 (5.7 to 5.3), HnI (147 to 146), and Overall Points Added to average conference lineup per 70 possessions (+6.6 to +6.4).

As for All Conference, there were the same top 5 players in both WAR/40 and HnI – the above two as well as Austin Tillotson of Colgate, Stephen Brown of Bucknell, and Will Kelly of Navy. That really should be the 1st team by my ratings. Jesse Reed of American does break into the party by being ranked 4th in WAR, but it was a miracle American won 9 games (ie, a bit of luck), and with only three players on that team appearing to be above league average overall – probably too much WAR credit is given to him and his solid season (and massive minutes) because those 9 team wins need to be divvied somehow. Just a bit of an anomaly in a small sample set of 18 games when a bad team somehow pulls out 9 wins.

Players who topped the conference in something or another in terms of rating subsets:

Tim Kempton, Lehigh: #1 in Overall Scoring Rating (+8.3 Points Added)

Kevin Ferguson, Army: #1 in Two Point Production Rating (+8.0 PA) and Rebound Rating (+5.3 PA)

Will Kelly, Navy: #1 in Defensive Stops Rating (steals, blocks, & fouls, +3.8 PA)

Kahron Ross, Lehigh, #1 in Handles/Passing Rating (Assists & Turnovers, +5.4 PA)

Eric Fanning, Boston University: #1 in Free Throw Production Rating (+4.9 PA)

D.J. MacLeay, Bucknell: #1 in overall Offensive Rating (+9.1 PA)

Jordan Swopshire, Colgate: #1 in Three Point Production Rating (+5.4 PA)

Tim Abruzzo, Navy: #1 in overall Defensive Rating (+3.7 PA)
